Fiber Design and Textile Processes

POLI.Design - Consortium of Politecnico di Milano

Program Duration: 1 year
Intake sessions: October  2018 ending September 2019
Program Cost: 12,000 Euro ( $ 14,850 )

Overview

The Specializing Master is completely held in English and it is reserved to candidates with a University Diploma, a Bachelor or a Master of Science in Industrial Design, Architecture, Engineering, Economics or Scientific disciplines (Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics). The Board shall admit applicants who have qualifications in disciplines other than those specified above, if the Master may complete the training of the applicant or the professional skills and experience shown by same.

Polymer fibers now account for approximately 70% of the market and the applications are:

  • chassis for automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding, railways and military;
  • structural parts with high resistance and low weight;
  • protective clothing for sporting activities, industrial workers and the military;
  • prosthetics for artificial limbs or organs;
  • advanced home automation.

All this combined with the latest web development: IoT (Internet of Things).

"Smart objects" are the future of integration man-machine and the textile manufacturing process can use IoT for all applications made available by new polymers. Textile fabrics are evolving and most probably, research is the best solution to find a link between aesthetics and functionality.

The Specializing Master in Fiber Design and Textile Processes was created because there is a need to explore this topic by paying particular attention to these types of new materials.

Founded and launched by two centers of excellence: Città Studi Biella with its tradition of technical skills and POLI.design that, together with the School of Design and the Department of Design, forms the Politecnico di Milano Design System, which is a pool of resources, skills, facilities, and laboratories that is among the most important in the world.

The goal is to offer a unique educational program by providing quality knowledge and skills for designing innovative fibers and new materials including the Internet of Things (IoT) and environmental sustainability, thanks to the local companies involved throughout the academic program and their generous support.

Goals

Together with the textile companies who are directly involved, the goal of the program is to increase today’s “textile culture”, necessary for new types of research on innovative fibers in parallel with the traditional "noble" fibers. The program also focuses on the current situation of the textile industry and the skills needed to understand this business and study the various technical applications and design of industrial products.

The manufacturing industry is a solid reference for participants in the Master, a world where one needs to learn about the production processes and materials in order to choose correctly the best technical solution to create an innovative product.

The didactics will be structured as follows:

  • Technicality for the Textile sector management
  • Design and Production
  • Sustainability
  • I.o.T.
  • Internship

Degree awarded
The Specializing Master grants 60 CFU, equivalent to 60 ECTS. Upon completion, students earn a Politecnico di Milano First level Specializing Master diploma in Fiber Design and Textile Processes.

Career opportunities

The Specializing Master in Fiber Design and Textile Processes aims to form a profile able to understand, manage and apply new fibers and new materials for the creation of a product in the various areas where these fibers may be used. Therefore, able to turn it into a consumer product in line with today’s buying behavior and customer needs and make the necessary changes or modifications in order to develop innovative products.

At the end of the program, the student will have learned how the technology of textile processing can manufacture objects or high-tech fabrics which may be integrated with IoT. The student will also acquire the ability to design a product not only from a point of view of functionality and aesthetics, but also from a point of view of production and global supply chain.
